Computer speakers come built in on most computers nowadays, whether they are a laptop or a desktop. The audio quality on most, though, is not really very good. Whether or not to buy depends on how frequently you need to use them. Those who might need external speakers are those who frequently listen to music, watch movies or play video games.

The music lover will do well with a 2.1 channel speaker system. Since music is almost always recorded in stereo, you can get the best sound with just two speakers. A 5.1 channel system can up-mix to three more speakers, but that won't really improve the sound quality.

But the serious gamer or movie buff probably needs that 5.1 channel system. Most movies and games will support surround sound. However, not all sound cards support can support more than two speakers so you will have to verify that first.

Most speakers sound better with a subwoofer. While this is not large, you do need to make sure you have enough from for one should you decide to get one. Usually they will fit under the desk.

The budget minded buyer can find the traditional wired 2.0 speaker setup, though the audio quality will not be as good as the 5.1. Those will work just fine if music is the primary reason for wanting external speakers. You can find these starting around $20. You might even find a system that includes a subwoofer for about $30.

Many people have gone exclusively to laptops or netbooks. So what's available for these users? Some inexpensive models make use of the USB port to minimize the wire mess. However, you can get a wireless device that uses a special receiver or Bluetooth. Some even have a single rechargeable unit.

Two speakers just aren't enough for the movie buff or serious gamer. They want to hear exactly what they feel. That's where the 5.1 surround speakers come in. So how much will that system set you back? Maybe not as much as you might think. You might be able to find one starting at about $100.

You might wonder if you could use these speakers with your home entertainment center. You'd have to look for a brand that matches your other home theater components.

Two of the leading brands of computer speakers are Altec Lansing and Logitech. Both have a full family of speakers available for just about anyone. For more information, you will want to check out Creative Computer Speaker.
